Employers Lukewarm About Retaining Older Workers

[8 May 2007 - The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College - By Andrew D. Eschtruth, Steven A. Sass, and Jean-Pierre Aubry] This new brief presents results from a CRR survey of employers, which found that:

  • Employers are lukewarm about retaining older workers.
  • Firms that expect employment growth and/or value older workers' knowledge are more likely to retain them.
  • Firms that view older workers as costly are less likely to accommodate them.
  • Overall, the results raise a cautionary flag about older workers' job prospects.
