ageing as exile?

"Exile is the cradle of nationality," according to Michael Higgins, Ireland's former minister of arts, culture and the Gaeltacht. We should "presuppose a sort of dialogue among exiles" who are together in a new place. Viewing ageing as "exile" offers a new (and positive) perspective about exile and ageing - one that can lead to older people better understanding their common "nationality" of what it means to be fully human - to be part of a greater whole.
