Current federal rules say workers who are covered by traditional pensions, or defined benefit plans, must retire completely from that company to collect benefits. But that may soon change. "Exile is the cradle of nationality," according to Michael Higgins, Ireland's former minister of arts, culture and the Gaeltacht. We should "presuppose a sort of dialogue among exiles" who are together in a new place. Viewing ageing as "exile" offers a new (and positive) perspective about exile and ageing - one that can lead to older people better understanding their common "nationality" of what it means to be fully human - to be part of a greater whole.
